Notch, peak or shawl: which lapel when?

The lapel is the first detail anyone notices on a suit, and it decides whether the suit reads formal or relaxed. There are three main types.

Notch lapel: the everyday choice

A small V-shaped step where the lapel meets the collar. It is the most common lapel on business and everyday suits, and the safe choice for a first suit.

Peak lapel: more formal, stronger shoulders

The lapel points up toward the shoulder, drawing the eye outward so the shoulders look broader. It suits double-breasted jackets, wedding suits, tuxedos and formal events.

Shawl lapel: for the evening

One continuous curve with no step, almost always on a tuxedo or dinner jacket, often faced in satin or velvet. Wrong for the office; perfect for an evening wedding or black-tie dinner.

In short

  • Office and many occasions: notch.
  • Weddings, events, double-breasted: peak.
  • Evening and black tie: shawl.
